The environmental impact assessment (EIA) is a crucial part of administrative planning procedures. Within the scope of permit procedures referring to the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG), the execution of an EIA might become necessary. Certain projects at which, due to their kind and size, only minor environmental impacts presumably can occur, the provisions of law require a preliminary screening (case-by case-examination).
The competent authority finally checks, on the basis of an environmental impact assessment (EIA), the compatibility with the environment of the project in question and incorporates the results in its overall decision.
